Information & Guidelines for the Installation of Floresta Wood Tiles

RECOMMENDED INSTALLATION

SOLI Floresta Wood tiles can be used in an extensive range of vertical design applications. Due to the delicate nature of these tiles, the Floresta Wood Collection is not recommended for high traffic flooring applications or areas that are subject to water and humidity. This is a natural product and is designed for interior use only.

SUBSTRATES

All substrates should be firmly fixed, flat, clean, dry and free of contaminants such as dust, oil, paint, sealers etc. to ensure proper adhesion. Painted surfaces must be scuffed or sanded for the product and adhesive to bond correctly. In humid environments, the use of a water proofing agent is recommended. If the area is not dry, humidity will evaporate through the wood backing of the tiles and may cause stains.

WATERPROOF MEMBRANES

Waterproof membranes prevent leakage of water through to the sub-floor framing and/or habitable spaces below. Particular attention must be paid to: carrying the membrane up the wall, outside shower boxes, installation of bond breakers, and sealing around penetrations. It is strongly recommended that membrane systems be used in all wet areas. Some systems may involve the use of a primer.

ADHESIVE

Apply a thin layer of thin set mortar to the back of each tile or stone as the work progresses. Next, apply the thin set mortar to the substrate with scraping motion, using the flat side of the notched trowel. Work the thin set mortar into good contact with the substrate. Using the notched side of the trowel, comb the thin set mortar in one direction. Use a trowel with notches large enough to ensure full coverage and support of the tile or stone. Firmly press the tiles into the fresh thin set mortar and move them perpendicularly across the ridges to flatten and compress the ridges. This helps to produce maximum coverage to the backs of the tiles and leaves the corners and edges fully supported.

Do not apply more thin set mortar than can be covered within 10-15 minutes, or while thin set mortar is still wet and tacky. Periodically, remove and check tiles to verify full thin set mortar coverage is being achieved. Allow tile installation to set for 24 hours at 70° F (21° C), prior to grouting. Excess thin set mortar must be cleaned from tile surfaces with a clean, wet cloth or sponge, while it is still fresh.

GROUTING

Ensure tile is firmly set and mortar is completely dry (typically 8 to 12 hours) before grouting. Remove all spacers, water, debris and adhesive from tile joints. Do not spread the grout over the entire surface of the tiles as this may cause the resin surface to absorb the grout. Use a grout float to apply the grout to the joints between the tiles only. Joints must be packed full and free of all voids and pits. Excess grout must be cleaned from the surface of the tiles while the grout is fresh and before it hardens. All residual grout haze must be removed during the final clean up, using a neutral pH detergent and water solution and a non-abrasive sponge. No acids should be used for cleaning the tile and grout installation.

SEALANTS

No sealants are required pre or post installation of the Floresta Wood tiles.

CARE & CLEANING

SOLI Floresta Wood tiles must be regularly cleaned and maintained to extend the life and beauty of the tile. The tiles can be cleaned with a neutral mild detergent. For tiles in high traffic areas keep surfaces clean from abrasive dirt. Do not use abrasive cleaners, powders, scouring pads, steel wool or sandpaper. Do not let soap, bleach or other cleaning solutions set on the surface. It is best to use wood cleaners and refreshers for the surface of this product to maintain its natural look.
